Below are just some of the authentic narrations which show that Hijama is from the Sunnah of the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam). This shows the importance and greatness of this Sunnah.

 

The Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah, and the people practise it, s/he will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing”.

Cupping (Hijama) the Best of Remedies

 

Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (Hijama)…”

[Saheeh al-Bukhari (5371)].

 

Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (Hijama).”

[Sunan Abu Dawud (3857), Sunan ibn Majah (3476)].

 

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (Radhiallahu Anhu): That he paid Al-Muqanna a visit during his illness and said, “I will not leave till he gets cupped, for I heard the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) saying, “There is healing in cupping.”

Saheeh Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 71, Number 600:

 

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu): The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: “Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing).” But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire.”

Saheeh Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 71, Number 584

 

Malik (Radhiallahu Anhu) related to me that he heard that the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “If there is a remedy that will reach the disease, then cupping will reach it.”

Importance of Cupping:

 

Narrated By Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu Anhu): The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: The best medical treatment you apply is cupping.

The Angels Recommending Cupping (Hijama) on the Night of Al Isra’:

 

Abdullah ibn Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: “O Muhammad, tell your nation to do Cupping”.

[Sunan ibn Majah (3477)].

 

He (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) also said that on the night of Israa (his ascension to the heavens) he (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) did not pass by an angel except that it said to him, “Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with Hijama (Cupping).”

Cupping (Hijama) Is Prevention

 

The Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Indeed in Hijama (Cupping) there is a cure.” [Saheeh Muslim (5706)].

 

He (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whoever performs Hijama on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” 

[SaheehSunanabi Dawud (3861)]

 

Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whoever wants to perform cupping (Hijama) then let him search for the 17th, 19th and 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) and let none of you allow his blood to rage (boil) such that it kills him.”

[Sunan ibn Majah (3486)].

 

Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “When the weather becomes extremely hot, seek aid in cupping (Hijama). Do not allow your blood to rage (boil) such that it kills you.”

[Reported by Hakim in his ‘Mustadrak’ and he authenticated it and Imam ad-Dhahabi agreed (4/212)].

 

In Cupping (Hijama) There Is a Cure and A blessing

 

Abdullah ibn Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Healing is in three things: in the incision of the cupper, in drinking honey, and in cauterizing with fire, but I forbid my Ummah (nation) from cauterization (branding with fire).”

[Saheeh al-Bukhari (5681), Sunan ibn Majah (3491)].

 

Jaabir ibn Abdullah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Indeed in cupping (Hijama) there is a cure.”

[Saheeh Muslim (5706)].

 

Ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Cupping (Hijama) on an empty stomach is best. In it is a cure and a blessing…”

Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure for Every Disease

 

Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whoever performs cupping (Hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.”

[Sunan Abu Dawud (3861)].

 

Recommended Dates and Days for Cupping (Hijama)

 

The best days for cupping (Hijama) are the 17th, 19th and 21st of the Islamic, lunar month which coincides with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.

 

Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whoever wants to perform cupping (Hijama) then let him search for the 17th, 19th and 21st…”

[Sunan ibn Majah (3486)].

 

Anas bin Malik (Radhiallahu Anhu) stated: the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) used the treatment of cupping on both sides of his blessed head and shoulders and generally this treatment was done on the 17th, 19th and 21st of the Islamic lunar month. (Tirmidhi).

 

Notes from therapist: If these days are not possible then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month. We tend to avoid Wednesdays for Cupping.

 

Cupping (Hijama) May Be Used For:

 

Headaches

 

Salma (Radhiallahu Anhu) the servant of the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whenever someone would complain of a headache to the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam), He (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) would advise them to perform cupping (Hijama).”

Sunan Abu Dawud (3858)].

 

Magic

 

Ibn al-Qaiyum (Radhiallahu Anhu) mentions that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped on his head when he was afflicted with magic and that it is from the best of cures for this, if performed correctly.

Poison

 

Abdullah ibn Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that a Jewish woman gave poisoned meat to the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) so he (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) sent her a message saying, “What caused you to do that?” She replied, “If you really are a Prophet then Allah will inform you of it and if you are not then I would save the people from you!” When the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) felt pain from it, he (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) performed cupping (Hijama). Once he travelled while in Ihram and felt that pain and hence performed cupping (Hijama).

Strengthening One’s Intelligence and Memory

 

Ibn Umar (RA) reported that the Messenger (Radhiallahu Anhu) said, “Cupping (Hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. In it is a cure and a blessing. It improves the intellect and the memory…”

[Sunan ibn Majah (3487)].

 

Dislocation/Bruising

 

Jaabir ibn Abdullah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) fell from his horse onto the trunk of a palm tree and dislocated his foot. Waki’ (RA) said, “Meaning the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped on (his foot) for bruising.”

[Sunan ibn Majah (2807)].

 

Areas of Cupping (Hijama)

 

Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was treated with cupping (Hijama) three times on the two veins at the side of the neck and the base of the neck.

[Sunan Abu Dawud (3860), ibn Majah (3483)].

 

Abdullah ibn Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped on his head.

[Saheeh al-Bukhari (5699)].

 

Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) used to cup his head and would call it (the place at the top of the head) “Umm Mugheeth.”

[Saheeh (753), Saheeh al-Jaami’ (4804)].

 

Jaabir ibn Abdullah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was treated with cupping (Hijama) on his hip for a pain in that area.

[Sunan Abu Dawud (3863)].

 

Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was treated with cupping (Hijama) when he was in Ihram, on the top of his foot, for a pain in that area.

[Sunan Abu Dawud (1836)].

 

The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) doing Cupping on his blessed head:

 

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Buhaina (Radhiallahu Anhu): The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped on the middle of his head at Lahl Jamal on his way to Mecca while he was in a state of Ihram. Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu): The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped on his head.

Cupping (Hijama) Whilst Fasting

The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped while he was fasting. However, if doing this weakens the fasting person, it is disliked.

 

Thabit al-Bunani asked Anas (Radhiallahu Anhu): “Did you dislike cupping for a fasting person during the time of the Prophet?” He answered: “No [we did not], unless it made someone weak.”

This is related by al-Bukhari.

 

Abdullah ibn Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu) that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped while he was fasting.

[Saheeh al-Bukhari (5694)].

 

Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) was asked: “Did you dislike cupping for the fasting person?” He said, “No except for the reason of one becoming weak.”

[Saheeh al-Bukhari (1940)].

 

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudhree (Radhiallahu Anhu) said, “The Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) validated cupping for the fasting person.”

[Saheeh see Irwaa al-Ghaleel (4/74)].

 

Cupping (Hijama) whilst fasting is allowed but disliked as Anas ibn Maalik (Radhiallahu Anhu) mentioned because the fasting person becomes weak if they perform cupping (Hijama) and Allah (Ta’ala) knows best.

 

Cupping (Hijama) Whilst In the State Of Ihram

 

Ibn ‘Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) got himself cupped in the state of Ihram.

Sahih Muslim Book 07.

 

Abdullah ibn Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped on his head for a unilateral headache while he was in Ihraam.

[Saheeh al-Bukhari (5701)].

 

Is it Permissible To Take Payment For Cupping:

 

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu): The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) was cupped, and he paid the wages to the one who had cupped him and then took Su’ut (Medicine sniffed by nose).

Volume 7, Book 71, Number 595:

 

‘Ali (RA) reported: “The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) once took the treatment of cupping and asked me to pay its fees. I paid the hajjaam (cupper) his fees”.

Sahih Muslim Book 10.
